This Manual has been developed as a source of consultation and guide for glaciological observations, both from a ship and from an Antarctic base. The correct use of the terminology, as well as the explanations in this Manual, will allow the user to make observations according to international standards with the possibility of generating IILL and IISS coded messages, which contain the details of the recorded information.

Likewise, the transmission of these messages with glaciological information will allow the Glaciology Division of the Meteorology Department of the NAVAL HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE, the quality control of the information, the verification of the processing of high-resolution satellite images and the generation of better products for glaciological advice and decision-making support for Commanders and Authorities in the planning and execution of Antarctic activities.
